The city's kerbside caddy rollout starts this week under Simpler Recycling, with collected material routed to anaerobic digestion for biogas and digestate
Coventry City Council begins separate weekly food waste collections this week, from Monday 7 September, adding the city to the growing list of English authorities feeding kerbside organics into anaerobic digestion.
Material collected from the new caddies will go to an AD facility, where it will be processed into biogas for renewable electricity generation and a nutrient-rich fertiliser supplied to local farms.
Most households will receive a 23-litre lockable bin, put out alongside the existing weekly wheelie bin collection. Flats will be issued smaller caddies, with residents tipping food waste into a shared communal bin.
Both cooked and uncooked food is accepted, including meat, fish and bones, dairy, bread, eggshells, teabags and coffee grounds, and fruit and vegetable peelings. Packaging is excluded, including material marketed as biodegradable, as are liquids, oils and liquid fats, garden waste and pet waste.
The scheme is government-funded and forms part of the Simpler Recycling programme, which requires all English councils to collect food waste separately, diverting it from incineration.
