The BDO Zone Initiative has expanded its network of standardised biomass and biofeedstock investment ratings to 58 zones across North America, with announced biomanufacturing investment associated with BDO Zones surpassing US$7.6 billion (€7.0 billion) in 2025.
The network expanded from 42 zones at the start of 2025, whilst the underlying rating methodology transitioned from a Canadian national standard to a joint ASTM–CSA standard.
Independent research by Dr Burton C. English of the University of Tennessee validated that projects announced in BDO Zones generate an average annual economic impact of US$423 million (€389 million) per facility.
BDO Zones provide standardised, investment-grade assessments of regional biomass feedstock availability, supply chain reliability and infrastructure readiness.
The framework reduces project development risk by transforming complex regional data into comparable metrics, enabling developers and investors to identify viable sites without repeating costly due diligence across regions.
Jordan Solomon, Chairman of the BDO Zone Initiative, characterised 2025 as marking a transition from network expansion to project advancement.
He noted that the network is now functioning as foundational market infrastructure, with developers evaluating BDO Zones as a platform rather than isolated regional ratings.
Network effects have intensified: each new zone increases the probability of developers finding matching feedstock, infrastructure and logistics combinations.
Major biomanufacturing companies are advancing projects within BDO Zones. Regen Biofuels is planning 25 RNG projects with potential for 60,000 rural jobs. USA BioEnergy's Texas Renewable Fuels Advanced Biorefinery project targets 2 million tonnes of woody biomass annually, generating approximately 1,000 construction jobs and 200 permanent operations roles. DG Fuels is developing biosynthetic aviation fuel capacity, with its Louisiana facility alone expecting a US$55 billion (€50.6 billion) economic impact over 30 years.
Midori Energy, representing an investment roadmap of nearly US$10 billion (€9.2 billion) and 1,500 direct jobs, describes BDO Zone ratings as an "indispensable due diligence mechanism" directly influencing site selection.
The network encompasses an additional pipeline of zones across 32 US states and 7 Canadian provinces. Developers are currently engaged in over US$30 billion (€27.6 billion) in active project discussions involving BDO Zones.
Adoption metrics show 48,827 page views and reach to over 6.4 million industry stakeholders worldwide. The transition to a joint ASTM–CSA standard signals institutional standardisation and broader market adoption of BDO Zone methodology.
