United Utilities has submitted plans for a £140 million scheme to upgrade Ellesmere Port Wastewater Treatment Works with advanced anaerobic digestion (AAD) technology, replacing existing digestion infrastructure to increase biogas production from wastewater sludge whilst reducing operational energy consumption.
Advanced anaerobic digestion systems break down material faster and more completely than conventional units, operating at higher temperatures that destroy pathogenic bacteria and reduce residual sludge volumes. The upgraded facility will process wastewater treatment by-products more efficiently, extracting energy value from sludge through enhanced biogas generation.
The project forms part of United Utilities' operational carbon emissions reduction strategy and supports the UK's transition to low-carbon energy and Net Zero 2050 objectives. Ellesmere Port is one of United Utilities' largest treatment facilities in Cheshire.
Tom Lissett, Bioresources and Green Energy Director at United Utilities, stated that the upgraded facility will address future wastewater treatment requirements whilst reducing carbon emissions. He noted that the design enables future innovations, including increased biogas production capacity and CO₂ capture integration as supporting technologies mature and become commercially available.
The scheme was designed to minimise physical footprint expansion by optimising existing land and infrastructure. The facility will maintain normal wastewater treatment operations throughout the upgrade period.
Advanced anaerobic digestion technology represents an established efficiency pathway for wastewater utilities seeking to improve energy recovery from sludge treatment and reduce fossil fuel consumption in digestion operations. The capital cost is recovered through biogas energy generation and reduced operational energy demand.
The project contributes to United Utilities' wider £13 billion infrastructure investment programme addressing water quality and wastewater management across the North West. The broader programme targets protection and enhancement of over 500 kilometres of rivers, lakes and bathing waters whilst safeguarding drinking water supplies for the regional customer base.
Wastewater treatment facilities represent significant biogas production opportunities, with sludge digestion generating renewable energy that can offset facility operational energy demand or be exported to grid-connected gas networks for wider energy supply. Advanced digestion technologies enhance yield from existing sludge feedstock volumes, improving overall energy recovery efficiency.
The Ellesmere Port upgrade exemplifies utility-scale biogas deployment within wastewater treatment infrastructure, demonstrating operational and financial viability at major treatment facilities.
