ReFuels N.V. has commenced construction of a new Bio-CNG refuelling station in Carlisle, North-West England, scheduled for operational deployment in the first half of 2027. The facility addresses growing fleet operator demand for domestically-produced renewable fuels offering cost predictability and supply security alternatives to imported diesel.
CNG Fuels, 40% owned by ReFuels, will own and operate the Carlisle site. Located near major logistics hubs including DPD's Carlisle delivery facility, the station serves significant regional and long-haul freight flows connecting England and Scotland.
UK diesel pump prices have increased approximately 30% over the past year, driven by continued disruption in the Strait of Hormuz and exposure to geopolitically-driven refinery disruption. Bio-CNG has historically exhibited substantially lower price volatility, whilst multi-year fixed-price agreements enable fleet operators to secure fuel cost certainty across operational planning horizons.
Philip Fjeld, CEO and co-founder of ReFuels, stated that fleet operators increasingly seek fuel with predictable budgeting characteristics and reliable supply. He noted that domestically-produced European biomethane delivered through gas pipeline infrastructure avoids the supply chain and price exposure inherent in imported diesel markets.
The Carlisle station will refuel 14 HGVs simultaneously at full utilisation, enabling daily throughput exceeding 800 trucks and annual dispensing capacity of over 30 million kilograms of 100% renewable Bio-CNG.
The expansion extends beyond Carlisle. New stations at Magor and Swindon are also under development, collectively enabling CNG Fuels to increase total network capacity from current 11,500 trucks per day to approximately 14,000 HGVs daily. Annual dispensing capacity will reach 460 million kilograms of Bio-CNG across the expanded network.
Current network deployment supports more than 2,250 daily refuelling events across 16 UK stations. By 2028, ReFuels targets installed refuelling capacity of approximately 20,000 HGVs per day, capable of dispensing over 780 million kilograms of biomethane annually — equivalent to more than 2.3 million tonnes of CO₂ savings annually.
The deployment trajectory reflects accelerating fleet operator adoption of Bio-CNG as a cost-effective, domestically-sourced alternative to diesel, with infrastructure expansion enabling route and schedule compatibility without operational change.
