Choctaw County, Alabama has received a Biofuel Development Opportunity (BDO) Zone 'A' rating for woody biomass feedstock supply and infrastructure, certifying 1,040,500 bone dry tonnes annually of low-risk woody biomass within a 75-mile drive radius from Butler, Alabama in the US.
The 'A' rating denotes high prospective viability of feedstock supply and infrastructure with low expectations of default risk. The region possesses an established forest products supply chain ensuring reliable feedstock availability, with underutilised forest residues representing significant, largely uncontested resource opportunity.
The anchor site is Choctaw Industrial Park, a 140-acre light industrial and forestry-zoned parcel on US Highway 10 in Butler, designated within a Federal Opportunity Zone. The site provides on-site utilities including electricity, natural gas and water service, positioning it for bio-based industrial development.
Dee Ann Campbell, Executive Director of the Choctaw County Economic Development Alliance, stated that the county possesses the feedstock base, forestry heritage and site-ready infrastructure to support bio-based investment. She characterised the rating as a meaningful signal to developers and investors evaluating low-risk, high-viability southeastern locations.

The BDO Zone Initiative provides internationally-recognised, standards-based technical risk assessment of regional feedstock, supply chain and infrastructure with respect to development potential for new biofuel and bioproduct plants. Investment-grade ratings function as location indicators for biomanufacturing site selection, attracting industrial facilities to regions most likely to succeed operationally and financially.
BDO Zone ratings have been issued across multiple North American regions, with Choctaw County representing a southeastern industrial site with significant woody biomass availability and established forest products supply infrastructure. The certification signals regional readiness for biomass-to-energy, biochemical or bioproduct facilities.
Choctaw County's rating reflects a broader regional trend: underutilised forest residues across the South represent a substantial feedstock base for bio-based industry development, contingent on site infrastructure and market access.
