CNG Fuels has signed a long-term agreement with Marks & Spencer to provide mobile refuelling stations at UK distribution centres, supporting the retailer's expanding biomethane-powered HGV fleet.

The stations, owned and operated by CNG Fuels – 40% owned by ReFuels – will provide combined capacity to refuel up to 300 trucks daily. M&S currently operates more than 210 Bio-CNG trucks, including approximately 150 Scania 4x2 and 26 Scania 6x2 vehicles, and plans to grow its lower-emission fleet to more than 300 by the end of March 2027.

The mobile refuelling units will complement CNG Fuels' UK-wide network of 16 public-access Bio-CNG stations, which is expanding to support up to 20,000 trucks per day by end-2028. Bio-CNG, produced from domestic waste feedstocks including food waste and agricultural by-products such as manure, delivers up to 85% lower CO₂ emissions compared to diesel.

The agreement covers the redeployment of one existing unit and the manufacture of up to three new stations, growing the mobile refuelling fleet from 10 to 14 by 2026.

Philip Fjeld, chief executive and co-founder of ReFuels, said: "Biomethane is a cost-efficient, domestic here-and-now solution to decarbonise road transport, and our mobile refuelling stations help large fleets decarbonise quickly. This agreement underscores the rapid growth in demand from major UK retailers and distributors."

Julian Bailey, transport director at M&S, said the company had trialled a range of technologies before selecting Bio-CNG as a key solution for its logistics fleet, describing it as "a proven, flexible and cost-efficient fuel supported by mature infrastructure".

Simon Gray, specialist sales manager at Scania UK, said the agreement reflected shared values between the three companies and described it as "just the beginning" of the partnership.
