Anaergia begins RNG deliveries to Southwest Gas

Anaergia has started delivering renewable natural gas to Southwest Gas Corporation's distribution system from its SoCal Biomethane facility in Victorville, California — the first delivery under the state's SB 1440 Biomethane Procurement Program.

The facility, located at the Victor Valley Wastewater Reclamation Authority, co-digests municipal wastewater solids and diverted organic waste from across Southern California, upgrading the resulting biogas to pipeline-quality RNG. It can process up to 104,000 tonnes of organic waste annually and has the potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions by up to 31,710 tonnes of CO2e per year.

The project received conditional approval from the California Public Utilities Commission in March 2026 and commenced deliveries after satisfying those conditions. CEO Assaf Onn said the facility demonstrates that organic waste can be converted into reliable, scalable renewable fuel using existing wastewater infrastructure, and described it as a "replicable blueprint" for other California communities.

Commercial partner Anew Climate markets RNG from the facility and supports utility offtake, carbon intensity compliance, and physical delivery, acting as a Core Transport Agent in California. Andy Brosnan, President of Low Carbon Fuels at Anew Climate, said the project reflects the cross-industry and regulatory coordination needed to bring RNG facilities online.

Southwest Gas President and CEO Justin Brown said the agreement represents a step towards responsibly integrating RNG into the utility's supply portfolio.

SB 1440 requires investor-owned utilities to procure RNG derived from landfill-diverted organic waste, with statewide targets pointing to the need for many similar projects by 2035. Anaergia says the SoCal Biomethane facility provides an operational and regulatory template to accelerate that broader rollout.
