Ahlstrom signs multi-year biomethane supply deals in Italy

Ahlstrom has signed multiyear biomethane supply agreements with two Italian energy producers, covering seven production plants and marking one of the largest direct producer-to-industrial-user deals of its kind in the country.

The fibre-based specialty materials manufacturer will use the biomethane as a drop-in replacement for fossil natural gas at its Italian sites, requiring no major infrastructure modifications.

Italy accounts for around 13% of Ahlstrom's global asset base and 9% of its workforce, making the agreements a significant component of the company's broader decarbonisation strategy.

The biomethane supplied under the contracts will be certified with guarantees of renewable origin. Ahlstrom says the deals are expected to cut carbon emissions by approximately 44% across its Italian industrial operations, equivalent to a reduction of around 65,000 tonnes of CO2e annually.

Juan García-Marquina Prieto, VP Energy Procurement and Energy Transition at Ahlstrom, said the agreements deliver "immediate and scalable CO2 reductions" while making use of existing assets. Marco Bellezza, Head of Special Projects and Technical Manager, added that integrating biomethane into day-to-day operations translates "ambition into action" without compromising reliability or efficiency.
