Germany's Federal Network Agency (BNetzA) has awarded contracts to 388 projects with a combined capacity of 491 MW in its latest biomass auction, though the tender was undersubscribed against a target of 727 MW.
A total of 494 proposals representing 637 MW were submitted, but 29 were excluded from the process. Because admitted bids fell short of the sought volume, the regulator capped awards at 80% of eligible submissions.
Winning bid values ranged from €0.1205/kWh to €0.1938/kWh, with a volume-weighted average of €0.1846/kWh — a modest increase on the €0.1811/kWh average recorded in the previous round, when 692 projects totalling 815 MW were successful. BNetzA president Klaus Mueller noted that despite subdued participation, pricing remained broadly stable.
Bavaria led the regional breakdown with 111 successful bids totalling 123 MW, followed by Lower Saxony (84 projects, 105 MW), North Rhine-Westphalia (43 projects, 55 MW) and Schleswig-Holstein (31 projects, 47 MW).
In a parallel biomethane tender, six projects with a combined capacity of 38 MW secured contracts — the first biomethane auction to attract bids since October 2022. All six submissions were accepted, though the 38 MW total fell short of the 61 MW target.
The auction was the first held under a revised support framework approved by the European Commission in September 2025 as part of Germany's broader biomass package. The updated scheme increased the maximum biomethane price by 10% to €0.2313/kWh; winning bids came in between €0.2299/kWh and €0.2312/kWh, with a volume-weighted average of €0.2308/kWh.
Geographically, Saxony performed strongest in the biomethane round with two projects totalling 20 MW, ahead of Lower Saxony (two projects, 7 MW), North Rhine-Westphalia (one project, 6 MW) and Schleswig-Holstein (one project, 5 MW).
The next biomass and biomethane auctions are scheduled to close on 1 October and 1 September respectively.
