Ukraine is preparing to export agriculturally sourced biomethane to Germany once an EU tracking database goes live and German legislation on renewable gas quotas comes into force, the country's Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture has said.
The announcement followed talks between Ukraine's minister Oleksiy Sobolev and two German federal ministers, environment minister Carsten Schneider and research and technology minister Dorothee Bär.
The two sides agreed that German experts would support Ukraine in certifying national emissions verifiers under the EU's ETS framework, a step required to unlock export flows.
Sobolev also raised concerns about the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), arguing that emissions assessments applied to Ukrainian steel exports may be overstated. He said Ukrainian steel is partly produced from scrap using electricity with low coal-based generation, and called for German expertise to help resolve the issue.
Talks with Bär covered potential collaboration in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, biotechnology, dual-use technologies, the space sector, and energy. The ministers also discussed startup accelerators and workforce retraining programmes.
Any agreements reached are expected to be formalised at the Ukraine Recovery Conference, due to be held in Gdańsk later this year.
