Finland inaugurates first industrial-scale liquefied biogas facility
Suomen Lantakaasu has commissioned Finland's first industrial-scale liquefied biogas production facility in Nurmo, representing a significant milestone in the country's efforts to build a nationwide renewable gas ecosystem and develop alternatives to fossil fuels in heavy transport.

The facility, developed by Nurmon Bioenergia (majority-owned by Suomen Lantakaasu, a joint venture between Valio and St1 Biokraft, with Atria Finland holding minority shares) has commenced operations with an annual production capacity of approximately 100 GWh of liquefied biogas, equivalent to 10 million litres of diesel.

Feedstock comprises manure from local farms alongside agricultural and food industry by-products. The facility is processing liquefaction, scheduled to commence in autumn 2026. Over 30,000 tonnes of manure have been received to date.

The plant produces three primary outputs: liquefied biogas for transport and heating applications, biofertiliser from digestate (supporting nutrient recycling), and commercial-grade CO₂. The Finnish government provided €9.4 million in energy investment aid and €101,800 for biofertiliser infrastructure.

Suomen Lantakaasu's broader strategy targets one terawatt-hour of annual domestic renewable energy production, representing approximately 1% of Finland's current energy consumption but providing significant liquefied biogas supply for heavy transport, maritime and industrial applications.

The facility integrates agricultural producers (via manure supply), the dairy sector (Valio), the food industry (Atria) and the energy sector (St1 Biokraft) into a single feedstock-to-product value chain, addressing both agricultural profitability and renewable energy production simultaneously.

The Nurmo plant marks a shift toward integrated biogas ecosystems in northern Europe, distinct from standalone digestion facilities. Revenue flows across farm operations, energy production and fertiliser supply chains.
