Nordic energy company Gasum and Finnish shipping company Wasaline have extended their bio-LNG supply agreement through 2027, reinforcing a long-standing partnership and both companies' commitment to sustainable maritime transport on the Baltic Sea.

Wasaline operates a carbon-neutral shipping corridor between Finland and Sweden, with its vessel Aurora Botnia running on batteries and biogas. Gasum supplies the vessel with bio-LNG, with the company citing supply security and consistent fuel quality as key factors in enabling Wasaline to maintain the route.

Peter Ståhlberg, managing director of Wasaline, said: 'Bio-LNG has played a central role in reducing our environmental footprint, and, together with batteries, eventually in establishing the first credible green shipping corridor across the Baltic Sea.'

Jacob Granqvist, vice president, maritime at Gasum, said: 'Gasum is proud to continue supporting Wasaline's ambition to lead the way in sustainable shipping. Partnerships like this, built on trust and operational excellence, have made it possible for us to develop our capabilities and offering in bio-LNG to the high level it is at today.'

Wasaline is part of Swedish shipping group Stena Line. By operating on bio-LNG, Aurora Botnia generates FuelEU Maritime regulation compliance for Stena Line's wider fleet of 40 vessels across 20 routes in northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

Gasum also offers FuelEU Maritime compliance as a service to ships calling at EU ports, operating a verified pool in which dedicated vessels run on bio-LNG to generate compliance on behalf of ships unable to meet the regulation's requirements.

Bio-LNG supplied by Gasum carries lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions around 90% lower than fossil fuel equivalents on average, rising to more than 100% when produced from livestock waste.
