St1 Biokraft inaugurates Stockholm pipeline to boost liquefied biogas output

Nordic biogas producer St1 Biokraft has inaugurated a new gas pipeline connecting its facilities in Henriksdal and Gladö Kvarn via Stockholm's gas network, more than doubling liquefied biogas (LBG) production capacity in the region.

The pipeline, which required two years of construction work through Stockholm, links the Henriksdal site — which produces only compressed biogas (CBG) — to the Gladö Kvarn facility, unlocking the full potential of the latter's LBG upgrading unit.

Designed for 240 GWh output, equivalent to around 22 million litres of diesel, the unit had been constrained by the absence of a grid connection.

Gladö Kvarn produces approximately 100 GWh of biogas annually from Stockholm residents' food waste and wastewater, and houses upgrading units for both CBG and LBG production. The LBG unit, completed in late summer 2023, was at the time among the world's largest liquefaction plants.

St1 Biokraft chief executive Miika Johansson said the inauguration marked a major milestone for the company. 'This connection means we can supply the market with even more liquefied biogas to help accelerate the green transition,' he said, adding that recent global developments underlined the importance of investing in locally produced energy infrastructure.

Jesper Karpsen, chief executive of Gasnätet Stockholm — part of Driva — said the pipeline would broaden the region's energy mix and reduce dependence on a single source. 'If recent years of global uncertainty have shown us anything, it is that we must safeguard our energy supply,' he said.

The project received investment support from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency's Klimatklivet programme. LBG is considered one of the most effective tools for decarbonising heavy road transport, shipping and industry, while also reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions.

GWh figures are stated as High Heating Value (HHV).
