South Korea opens subsidy applications for wood pellet heating systems

South Korea's Korea Forest Service is accepting first-round applications for its 2027 Wood Pellet Boiler and Heater Distribution Support Programme until 11 May.

The scheme operates on a preemptive basis, with applications submitted the year before installation so that systems can be in place ahead of the winter heating season. A second application round is planned for the second half of 2026.

Residential installations are eligible for a subsidy covering 70% of the product cost, while boilers destined for social welfare facilities receive full funding. Applicants must be able to meet installation costs independently and commit to a mandatory five-year usage period. Those whose previously subsidised units have been in operation for more than five years are also eligible to apply.

The Korea Forest Service notes that one kilogram of wood pellets displaces approximately 0.4 litres of kerosene and reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 1.14 kilograms. Wood pellets, produced from forestry by-products, are classified as a carbon-neutral fuel under international standards.

Applications can be submitted through local city, county or district offices and administrative welfare centres.
