Slovak gas distributor SPP – distribúcia has connected a new biomethane station in Ožďany to the national distribution network, adding nearly 4 million cubic metres of renewable gas capacity per year.
The station, owned by CITA VIA, was created by retrofitting an existing biogas plant in the Rimavská Sobota district over 24 months. The upgrade — supported by a subsidy of approximately €1.5 million from Slovakia's Renovation Plan — added processing, cleaning and odorising technology to convert biogas into grid-quality biomethane. Feedstocks are locally sourced manure and poultry droppings.
At full capacity, the Ožďany station will supply enough biomethane to meet the annual gas needs of more than 2,400 households, according to SPP – distribúcia.
The connection brings the total number of biomethane stations on SPP – distribúcia's distribution network to four, following the country's first injection point in Jelšava in 2022. The distributor says it currently holds connection contracts with a further 18 stations and expects the pace of connections to accelerate this year and next.
Marek Paál, director of distribution services at SPP – distribúcia, said the company supports renewable gas projects from the outset, including financial contributions toward connection infrastructure. Slovakia's total biomethane potential is estimated at around 500 million m³ annually — broadly equivalent to the gas consumption of all the country's heating plants.
Richard Kvasňovský, executive director of the Slovak Gas and Oil Association, said biomethane represented a concrete step in decarbonising a sector that currently meets around a quarter of Slovakia's energy needs, with hydrogen also under consideration for the longer term.
SPP – distribúcia also operates Slovakia's Renewable Gas Register, which issues guarantees of origin and facilitates biomethane trading at both national and European level.
