Construction underway on 112 MW biomass plant in Japan

Construction is underway on a 112 MW thermal biomass power plant in Japan’s Miyagi Prefecture.

Sumitomo Corporation, together with Sumitomo Corporation Tohoku, has commenced construction of the plant in Sendai City.

The facility will be located on an industrial site on Sendai Shiogama Port premises, located in Miyagino-ku. With a generation capacity of 112 MW, it will be capable of supplying power to roughly 260,000 households.

Sumitomo will import and supply wood pellets certified under international forest certification systems. It is also considering the utilisation of domestic resources. The total cost of the project is roughly 90 billion yen (€690 million), with commercial operation scheduled to begin in October 2025.
