Czechia's inaugural auction for biomethane operational support has attracted serious industry interest, surpassing government expectations nearly fourfold, the Ministry of Industry and Trade (MPO) has announced.
The May auction aimed to fund 45 million cubic metres of biomethane production per year. However, 63 projects applied with a total capacity of 176.4 million cubic metres. The ministry noted that strong competition drove down reference auction prices for winning bids, which reduced the overall cost to public funds. MPO plans to hold further auctions over the coming years to expand domestic renewable gas capacity as part of the broader Czech framework, which links biomethane production, grid distribution and end use into a unified system.
Karel Havlíček, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Industry and Trade, said the level of interest had surpassed even the government's most optimistic expectations. "This confirms that we set up the biomethane support correctly and that this sector has a strong future in Czechia," he said.
