Bankinter Investment and Plenium Partners buy Italian biomethane business
Spain's Bankinter Investment and Plenium Partners have acquired Italian biomethane platform BG Holding from Green Arrow Capital and IRON RE, through their joint Ecualia Capital fund, adding two contracted plants to their renewable gas portfolio in Italy. Financial terms were not disclosed.

BG Holding owns two biogas plants in Aprilia, in Italy's Lazio region, currently being converted for biomethane production, with commercial operations expected to begin between July and September 2026.

The projects were developed and previously owned by Italian bioenergy developer IRON RE together with alternative investment firm Green Arrow Capital.

Once conversion is complete, each plant will have a production capacity of 517 standard cubic metres of biomethane per hour, with output fed into Italy's gas network via Snam Rete Gas and Italgas.

Together the two sites will process around 120,000 tonnes of livestock and agro-industrial by-products annually, including agricultural residues and animal by-products, and are expected to produce roughly 90 GWh of renewable biomethane a year — equivalent to the average annual gas consumption of around 6,000 Italian households.

This is estimated to avoid an estimated 18,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by displacing fossil natural gas.

Bankinter Investment and Plenium Partners said the plants have secured support under the third biomethane auction run by Italy's state energy services manager GSE, giving the projects a long-term regulated revenue stream.

The deal expands Ecualia Capital's Italian biomethane holdings, which already include projects with combined capacity of around 750 scm/h.

Bankinter Investment is the alternative investment arm of Spanish bank Bankinter, while Madrid-based Plenium Partners is its long-standing partner across renewable energy and other sectors.

The two firms have separately announced plans to integrate their asset management businesses into a combined platform with around €14 billion (US$15.9 billion) in assets under management, subject to regulatory approval.
