OPG awards Aecon with biomass plant contract

In Canada, electricity generation company Ontario Power Generation (OPG) has awarded construction and infrastructure development firm Aecon Group's industrial division a $170 million (€137 million) design and construction contract for its Atikokan Generating Station (GS) biomass conversion project.

Under the contract, Aecon will modify the existing facility with the addition of fuel handling and storage systems. The plant will then be able to handle sustainable biomass materials for the production of renewable electricity.

When it is completed in 2014, the Atikokan GS will be one of North America's largest renewable power biomass plants, able to generate over 200MW of capacity.
