Europe’s largest biomass burial carbon removal deal signed

Carbon credit procurement platform Senken has signed a multi-year offtake agreement with Carbonsate, a Berlin-based developer of biomass geological storage projects, covering 50,000 tonnes of verified permanent carbon removal. The deal represents the largest biomass storage transaction executed in Europe and the second-largest buyer commitment in the biomass burial category globally.



Carbonsate's technology prevents atmospheric reversion of carbon in waste wood by storing material in sealed, engineered underground chambers where decomposition and oxidation cannot occur. Each site operates with proprietary monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) infrastructure, independently audited under the Puro.earth standard for permanence.



The commercial advantage of biomass burial over competing carbon removal methodologies lies in operational cost structure. Unlike direct air capture, which requires energy-intensive separation processes, biomass storage requires no capture step — waste wood is simply sealed and monitored. This cost differential enables permanent carbon removal delivery at a fraction of direct air capture pricing.



Carbonsate operates a biomass geological storage project in Namibia. Carbon deliveries under the agreement will commence in 2026 and continue through 2028.



Johanna Broell, co-founder and CEO of Carbonsate, stated that long-term purchase commitments provide project developers certainty for capital deployment and site expansion. The agreement supports growth of Namibian storage capacity and brings verified carbon removal supply to European buyers.



Adrian Wons, CEO of Senken, noted that demand for permanent carbon removal exceeds available verified capacity. Senken's platform vetted the deal against over 600 data points and serves large European companies including Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone and DZ Bank.



The transaction signals institutional capital movement toward nature-based carbon removal solutions backed by rigorous verification protocols, as corporate net-zero commitments drive demand for verified permanent removal capacity.
