Maine awards over $5m in wood-to-energy grants

In an attempt to reduce its reliance on fossil fuels and lower GHG emissions, the Maine Department of Conservation in the US is awarding over $5.55 million (€4.05 million) in funding to eight conservation projects.

The grants will see traditional heating systems at six schools, the University of Maine and Northern Maine Medical Center replaced by either wood chip or pellet boilers.

According to the Maine Department of Conservation, the projects will create 185 new jobs.
