Schroders Greencoat acquires Dutch biomethane platform

Schroders Greencoat has acquired a 100% stake in APF Energy, a biomethane platform in the Netherlands, from SWEN Capital Partners and APF BV.

The platform comprises six assets, including three fully operational sites and three under construction, plus a late-stage development pipeline.

The sites produce biomethane from a feedstock mix of agricultural manure and food by-products, helping to address nitrate challenges associated with the Dutch livestock industry.

The acquisition was made on behalf of Schroders Greencoat's global strategy and semi-liquid funds. The company said the Netherlands represented an attractive market due to its high volume of agricultural feedstock and one of the densest gas distribution networks in Europe.

Minal Patel, global head of infrastructure at Schroders Capital, said biomethane had "an increasingly important role to play in the European energy transition, particularly in sectors where other low-carbon solutions are less readily available," adding that the Netherlands' mature regulatory framework and strong policy support for renewable gas made it one of the more advanced markets.

James Reid, investment director at Schroders Greencoat, described the deal as consistent with the firm's focus on established platforms with operational assets and a clear development pathway.

Marco Middelkoop, CEO of APF Energy, said the company looked forward to working with Schroders Greencoat to scale the platform and accelerate biomethane's contribution to the Dutch energy transition.

Schroders Greencoat was advised by Voltiq and Eversheds. SWEN Capital Partners was advised by Green Giraffe Advisory and Clifford Chance.
