Portugal issues first Guarantee of Origin for biomethane in transport sector
REN – Rede Eléctrica Nacional, acting as Portugal's Guarantees of Origin Issuing Entity (EEGO), has registered the country's first Guarantee of Origin (GO) certification for biomethane used in the transport sector, with G3 | Go Green Gas becoming the first company in Portugal to certify the renewable origin of biomethane for that application.

Guarantees of Origin are electronic certificates confirming that a given quantity of energy was produced from a specific renewable source and technology, allowing suppliers and end users to demonstrate renewable energy consumption for sustainability strategies and reporting requirements.

Isabel Fernandes, Director of Energy Services at REN, said the certification demonstrates the maturity of Portugal's national platform as a reference tool for certifying renewable gas origin, and shows its capacity to keep pace with a fast-moving market, as well as the practical interconnection between Portugal's system and its European counterparts.

Joaquim Marques, CFO and Head of Business Operations at G3 | Go Green Gas, described the certification as a tangible step toward accelerating the energy transition and decarbonising road transport, and as reinforcing the company's long-standing commitment to renewable gas-based mobility — now formalised within the national certification system, consistent with practices G3 had already followed.

G3 | Go Green Gas specialises in gas-powered mobility solutions for heavy passenger and freight fleets. The company became the first to market biomethane in Portugal in 2023, and has built certification of the fuel's renewable origin into its core value proposition; it will now carry this out through the EEGO platform.

EEGO manages the electronic issuance, transfer and certification of these guarantees across mainland Portugal. The platform extended its scope to the gas sector in June 2024, and began covering cross-border operations in November of that year after joining the Association of Issuing Bodies (AIB) and the European Energy Certificate System (EECS), enabling certificates to circulate and be mutually recognised among member countries.
