A standardised framework for tracking and certifying biogas and biomethane attributes has been launched by the I-TRACK Foundation and Global Gas Tracking, enabling certificates to be issued, transferred and redeemed across international markets.
The I-TRACK Product Code for Biogas and Biomethane — known as I-TRACK(G) — was developed by a consortium of Evident Group in the UK and Instituto Totum in Brazil, following a public consultation and initial testing through Instituto Totum's GAS-REC registry in Brazil.
Certificates will be issued and tracked through registries operated by Instituto Totum and Evident, which is now part of Xpansiv. Outside Brazil, Evident will operate the new I-TRACK(G) Registry.
The framework is designed to be interoperable with other I-TRACK product codes, including I-REC(E) for renewable electricity and I-TRACK(HX) for hydrogen, allowing consistent attribute management across energy carriers.
Jared Braslawsky, executive director of the I-TRACK Foundation, said the launch extended the reach of its International Attribute Tracking Standard into renewable gas markets, enabling "consistent, transparent, and high-integrity tracking across jurisdictions."
Travis Caddy, director at Evident, said the standard could help "accelerate access to finance for projects and drive real-world deployment of renewable gas solutions" by giving end-users trusted, tradeable certificates.
