Suzuki signs MoU for compressed biogas plant in Assam, India
The agreement, signed in New Delhi on 2 July, marks the latest step in Suzuki's ongoing collaboration with NDDB and India's dairy sector on biogas production. NEDFL, headquartered in Guwahati and known for its Purabi dairy brand, is a joint venture between the Government of Assam and NDDB.
The signing was held in the presence of Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Dr Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB. The MoU itself was signed by S. Rajeev, Executive Director of NDDB; Satya Brata Bose, Managing Director of NEDFL; and Kenichiro Toyofuku, Director of SRDI and Managing Officer of Suzuki.
Under the partnership, NDDB will provide technical and institutional support for the project, while NEDFL will execute and operate the plant and handle marketing and sale of the compressed biogas and bio-fertiliser produced. SRDI will invest in the project and capture the associated carbon credits from the resulting emissions reductions. Nenews
The plant will convert agricultural and dairy waste into compressed biogas and organic fertiliser, supporting a circular economy in the state and offering farmers an additional income stream by creating value from waste that would otherwise go unused. NenewsNenews
Dr Shah said the North East, and Assam in particular, is known for its near-natural agricultural practices, and that the project would help strengthen sustainable organic farming while boosting incomes from dairying. Toshihiro Suzuki noted that the company is currently involved in nine biogas plants across India, two of which are already operational in Banaskantha, Gujarat, and that Suzuki will continue supporting Japan and India's push to expand biogas adoption. The Assam project follows Suzuki's broader push into Indian biogas infrastructure, including a December 2022 MoU with NDDB and Banas Dairy in Gujarat that led to four CBG plants under development in Banaskantha district.
