Fedrigoni signs biomethane agreement

Fedrigoni Group has secured one of Italy's first long-term biomethane supply agreements in the paper industry, covering around 40% of the gas requirements at its Italian manufacturing plants and cutting the cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of products at those sites by between 30% and 50%, depending on product line.

The deal involves Verdalia Bioenergy, CH1, Fri-El and Bio.Methane.Hub, and supplies renewable biomethane through Italy's existing national gas grid, certified with Guarantees of Origin and Proof of Sustainability under RED II/III criteria. It has already been applied at Fedrigoni's Varone plant in Trentino.

The Italian paper maker says it operates in a hard-to-abate manufacturing sector where electrification options are limited and certain process emissions unavoidable, making biomethane substitution one of the most viable routes to reducing carbon intensity in paper production. The long-term structure of the agreement also helps reduce the group's exposure to geopolitical volatility and dependence on imported fossil fuels.

Stefano Zanoni, group head of energy transition at Fedrigoni, said the company's approach to energy transition was designed to strengthen competitiveness and resilience alongside delivering sustainability outcomes, both for Fedrigoni and its customers.

The initiative sits within Fedrigoni's Making Progress sustainability strategy and its ESG 2030 targets, which encompass carbon reduction, circular product design and responsible sourcing.
