Australian vegetable producer Kalfresh has signed German anaerobic digestion (AD) specialist Weltec Biopower to design and build the first stage of its bioenergy facility at Kalbar in South-East Queensland.
The plant will anchor the new Scenic Rim Agricultural Industrial Precinct, with Weltec's equipment due on site in late August, when construction of the first AD tank will get underway.
The facility will process crop residues, processing offcuts and agricultural waste from Kalfresh's vertically integrated operations into renewable by-products — realising what the company describes as the "paddock-to-power" potential of its business. Nutrient-rich digestate will be returned to farms as biofertiliser, supporting Kalfresh's long-term ambition of circular agriculture.
Weltec will deploy its stainless-steel tank technology at the site, chosen for its durability, corrosion resistance and operational longevity.
