Cavalier County, North Dakota has become the first location in North America to receive a BDO Zone 'A' rating for canola seed, with the designation covering 565,000 tons per year within a 75-mile radius of Munich, ND.

The rating, issued by the BDO Zone Initiative and Canadian biomass advisory firm Ecostrat, assesses the prospective viability of feedstock supply and infrastructure. An 'A' rating indicates low default risk and high readiness for biobased development. It is also the first BDO Zone rating issued in North Dakota.

The region is one of the continent's strongest canola-producing areas, with more than 5,000 multi-generational farmers operating within the supply zone, many managing upwards of 1,000 acres. Assessors cited strong transport links, favourable regulations, robust on-farm storage and an experienced workforce as supporting factors.

Local officials have pointed to the rating as validation of the region's potential for value-added processing. Austin Lafrenz, president of the Cavalier County Commission, noted that canola currently has to be shipped to processing plants elsewhere, with freight costs borne by growers. 'To have a processing facility right in our own backyard would be extremely impactful and beneficial,' he said.

Research backing is well established: the Langdon Research Extension Center has been conducting canola studies since the late 1980s, with documented improvements in yield and disease-resistant varieties over recent decades.

Jordan Solomon, chairman of the BDO Zone Initiative, said the rating reflected a solid foundation for canola seed-based development, with minimal local competition and clear pathways for further investment.
