Casella Waste Systems and Waga Energy have held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the opening of a renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at the Chemung County Landfill in Elmira, New York, with the site having produced RNG since January 2026.
The facility uses Waga Energy's WAGABOX technology to upgrade landfill gas to pipeline-quality RNG, which is injected directly into the Valley Energy natural gas distribution network.
It is designed to generate up to 610,000 MMBtu of renewable gas annually and is expected to avoid more than 47,000 tonnes of CO₂-equivalent emissions each year under US Environmental Protection Agency standards.
Through its first four months of operation, the facility is projected to produce 340,000 MMBtu in its first year, equivalent to around 2.4 million gallons of diesel fuel.
Under the agreement, Waga Energy funded and built the facility and will own and operate it for 20 years, with the two companies sharing revenue from RNG sales.
Ned Coletta, president and CEO of Casella Waste Systems, said the project demonstrated the benefits of partnering with specialists rather than developing RNG capability in-house, describing it as "a great example of the collective expertise of Chemung County, Waga Energy, and our landfill operations team coming together to create value out of the waste we manage."
Guénaël Prince, chief executive of Waga Energy, said the commissioning of the Chemung facility showed "how innovative collaboration can turn waste into a valuable resource for the energy transition."
