AXEGAZ T&T and Cargill launch first Baltic Bio-LNG shipment

The operation strengthens the companies’ presence in Europe’s renewable marine fuel market and responds to rising regional demand driven by new EU decarbonisation rules.
The Bio-LNG — produced by liquefying biomethane supplied by Cargill — will be distributed as a sustainable bunker fuel across the Baltic.
AXEGAZ T&T coordinated the operation alongside KN Energies, Cargill and AVENIR, ensuring full compliance and safe handling throughout the transfer.
The achievement is AXEGAZ T&T and Cargill’s first Bio-LNG loading in the Baltic Sea.
The choice of Klaipeda reflects the region’s rapidly growing LNG market, its strategic location and KN Energies’ reputation for innovation and commercial flexibility.
Klaipeda’s LNG Terminal — built around the FSRU Independence — offers a full suite of regasification and LNG reloading services for both large- and small-scale operations.
Its recent investment in virtual biomethane liquefication has positioned it as a frontrunner in supporting renewable gas solutions.
KN Energies’ commitment to lowering emissions, including electrification powered entirely by renewable energy, was another decisive factor for the partners.
The expansion comes as stricter European regulations reshape the maritime fuels market.
FuelEU Maritime and the inclusion of shipping in the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) are pushing operators towards low-carbon alternatives.
Bio-LNG is emerging as a leading option due to its significantly lower carbon intensity — and in some certified production pathways, its potential for net-negative emissions.
Cargill’s green pooling model, supported by AXEGAZ T&T, enables shipping operators to access certified renewable fuels across multiple regions while simplifying administrative and compliance obligations.
As an early mover in the sector, AXEGAZ T&T is positioned to support rapid market adoption.
The successful maritime operation in Klaipeda highlights AXEGAZ T&T’s technical expertise, logistical capabilities and readiness to operate in new and demanding markets.
The company says this strengthens its platform for further growth across the Baltic, North-West Europe and the Mediterranean.
Brigitte Morriello, AXEGAZ T&T chairperson, thanked partners and local representatives for their support: “To ensure maximum impact, we have been actively coordinating technical and operational efforts across our internal teams, our partners KN Energies, Cargill and AVENIR, with the support of our local representatives in Lithuania, all of whom we would like to thank.
"Through close cooperation with major players in the supply chain, we are bringing LNG and Bio-LNG to new users in the Baltic, North-West Europe and the Mediterranean.”
