The programme for the 2023 World Biogas Summit, which will take place at the NEC Birmingham, UK on 29-30 March 2023, has been published.
Organised by the World Biogas Association (WBA) the Summit is the only global thought-leadership forum entirely dedicated to anaerobic digestion (AD) and biogas.
Under the hashtag #MakingBiogasHappen, this year’s event will highlight the role that AD and biogas can play in delivering the Net Zero transition in the face of current global challenges. With this in mind, it will feature keynote speeches by Jennifer Sara, global director for climate change global practice at the World Bank, Tim Gould, chief energy economist at the International Energy Agency and Hennadiy Zhuk, professor/director at the Gas Institute NAS of Ukraine, whose address will bring much poignancy to the proceedings.“Recent world events and their impact on climate, energy and food security on a global scale have put in sharp perspective the value of AD and biogas as solutions to these crises,” explained Charlotte Morton OBE, WBA chief executive.
“The UNFCCC say deployment of AD technology is among the ‘fastest, most economical’ ways to deliver a vast array of services that address those issues. Treating through AD all of the 105bn tonnes of organic wastes generated annually by human activity could provide homegrown biogas, biofertilisers and other bioproducts that would secure energy and food self-sufficiency and deliver 50% of the Global Methane Pledge. This year’s World Biogas Summit will highlight how this can be achieved and the contributions from our keynote speakers will be particularly valuable in reaching our goals. We look forward to welcoming them on our stage.”
Fully deployed, the global AD and biogas could grow into a $34trn industry and create 10-15 million new green jobs.
In addition to exploring how decarbonisation through AD can be rolled out through the finance, transport, agriculture and other key sectors, the World Biogas Summit will look at the impact of big oil companies now investing in the green technology, cast spotlights on emerging markets in Brazil and Indonesia and debate the growing role of women in the industry.
International industry leaders sharing their insights over the two days include Amir Akbari, CEO, Anessa, Ricky Maylin, co-director of ONM Energy, Kunal Shah, chief growth officer and managing director Asia at Anaergia, Dr Gerard J. Ostheimer, global lead for sustainable bioenergy, BioFuture Campaign, Dr Oscar Schoumans, senior scientist at Wageningen University & Research, Felipe Souza Marques, director president of CiBiogas and Pierre-Emmanuel Pardo, innovation manager at SUEZ.View World Biogas Summit full programme
Meanwhile, the co-located, and sold out, World Biogas Expo organised by WBA in partnership with the UK Anaerobic Digestion and Bioresources Association (ADBA), will feature exhibitors from around the world showcasing their latest products and services, whilst industry experts will offer insights on all aspects of the AD and biogas industry in the Engine Room theatre – with topics ranging from innovation in processes and technology, plant optimisation, digestate and net zero farming to carbon markets and a regional focus on Ireland.
