Bmp greengas partners with packaging firm to deliver biomethane

Bmp greengas is now supplying biomethane to German company Wiegand-Glas to produce glass packaging.

The two companies started their collaboration in February after one of Wiegand-Glas’ clients, soulproducts, approached the company to produce its glass drinking bottles using biomethane. The soulbottles are now produced exclusively with green gas.

The range of climate-neutral glass bottles form part of the ‘Eco2Bottle’ concept, an initiative led by Wiegand-Glas for more environmentally-friendly packaging solutions. What started in 2020 as a package of measures with an additional compensation programme for wine bottles has now been extended to include, among others, the bottle production for soulproducts using biomethane.

“Our customer, soulproducts, with their soulbottles, stands for sustainable, plastic free and stylish drinking bottles,” said Lukas Neubauer, head of controlling and corporate development at Wiegand-Glas.

“Its wish to switch production to biomethane was the reason for us to revise our Eco2Bottle concept again and to offer a thoroughly green and regional bottle production.

“In addition to recycled glass, we now also use biomethane in the production process for all soulbottles. By doing so, we have significantly reduced the carbon footprint of the end product even more.”

The gas is produced by bmp greengas from municipal waste and is, therefore, a ‘perfect example’ of a functioning recycling economy, said the firm. Additionally, the biomethane comes from Germany, creating a low-CO2 value chain in production and transport.

Regina Hafner, responsible for industrial customers at bmp greengas, commented: “The melting of glass and the manufacturing of glass packaging is extremely energy-intensive.

“The town of Glashutten and Wiegand-Glas are subject to the legally required CO2 tax under the Federal Act on Stock Exchanges and Securities Trading and the European Emissions Trading System.

“The conversion of individual production lines from fossil raw materials to biomethane partially exempts them from the mentioned CO2 taxes and makes a significant contribution to protecting the climate.

“The actions of Wiegand-Glas and soulproducts show that economic efficiency and environmental protection do not have to be a contradiction.”
