Geminor targets biomaterials expansion as waste and biomass streams converge
The move reflects a broader industry shift in which waste and biomass are increasingly treated as converging streams within the transition to low-carbon energy. Geminor says it aims to combine local knowledge of lower-value, underutilised materials with large-scale biomass flows to deliver flexible, cost-competitive supply solutions.
Victor Smith, recently appointed to lead the biomaterials initiative, said the company is targeting fractions that are often overlooked rather than sourcing only higher-value materials, creating locally adapted supply solutions across the value chain.
The expansion is linked to Geminor's existing logistics network and hub operations, where complementary waste and biomass trade flows enable more efficient transport and handling. The company has already established initial biomass flows across the Nordic region and the Baltics and is exploring further opportunities through existing and new hub locations.
Tightening EU regulatory requirements are also shaping the strategy. Geminor is working towards sustainability certifications including SBP and SURE, and is building internal compliance and documentation capabilities to help both suppliers and customers navigate frameworks including REDIII and the ongoing review of ETS inclusion. The company warned that smaller and local suppliers face a material risk of market exclusion if compliance burdens go unaddressed.
Chief commercial officer Ralf Schöpwinkel said the expansion represents a natural next step in strengthening Geminor's role as a partner in the circular economy.
