Indonesia's state-owned energy company Pertamina has partnered with the West Java provincial government to capture methane emissions from the Sarimukti landfill and convert them into biomethane and low-carbon hydrogen. The collaboration, formalised in Bandung on 29 July, targets an integrated clean energy value chain spanning feedstock management, processing and energy distribution.
Under the scheme, landfill gas will be upgraded to biomethane before further processing into low-carbon hydrogen.
The project involves multiple Pertamina subsidiaries - including Pertamina New & Renewable Energy and its gas subholding - alongside international technology partners including South Korea's Hyundai, to accelerate deployment of low-carbon energy infrastructure.
The partnership covers waste management, environmental protection and community engagement initiatives.
Beyond the Sarimukti project, West Java has also launched construction of the Legok Nangka waste-to-energy facility, designed to process approximately 2,000 tonnes of municipal waste daily into around 40 megawatts of electricity whilst supporting future hydrogen and biomethane production.
Pertamina describes the initiative as a pilot model for Indonesia's hydrogen ecosystem, with potential for replication across other regions if commercially proven. The company frames the development as balancing energy transition with environmental sustainability and waste reduction pressures on existing landfill infrastructure.
