Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has directed officials to identify land near dairy colonies in the national capital for the development of Bio-CNG plants.
Speaking after returning to Delhi from a visit to Mathura, the Chief Minister underscored the government’s commitment to clean energy and environmental sustainability.
She said that setting up biogas plants will not only produce renewable energy but also contribute to cleaning the Yamuna River by ensuring the proper disposal of cow dung.
During her trip, CM Gupta inaugurated a waste-to-wealth Bio-CNG plant in Kamar village, Mathura, citing it as an example of how such initiatives can serve both environmental and civic goals.
She stated that similar projects are already in the pipeline for Delhi, particularly in areas near dairy colonies.
Delhi is home to over 12,000 dairies, which collectively produce thousands of tonnes of cow dung daily. Gupta highlighted that improper disposal of this waste, much of which flows into the Yamuna through open drains, is a major contributor to the river’s pollution. The proposed biogas plants are aimed at addressing this issue directly.
"The government recognises that managing dairy waste is critical to the larger mission of Yamuna cleaning. That’s why we're actively pursuing the establishment of biogas facilities in these areas," said Gupta.
She criticised previous administrations for failing to take meaningful action on the issue.
“Past governments did little to find a solution to the dairy waste problem. Our administration is taking this seriously and is already laying the groundwork for a long-term fix,” she stated.
The Chief Minister confirmed that consultations have been held with residents and dairy operators, with many supporting the initiative.
Work is expected to begin soon on identifying suitable sites and initiating the first phase of plant development.
