The tool, which sits under the EU Energy and Raw Materials Platform, is free to use and offers several functions: a matching service to connect buyers and suppliers, a regulatory dashboard with up-to-date information on national frameworks, project development support through an 'investment conditions' feature, and links to financing opportunities at local and regional level.
Registrations opened on 18 June, with the first matching round scheduled for September. Additional features are set to be rolled out gradually thereafter.
The Commission framed the launch as a response to ongoing geopolitical instability and pressure on energy markets, arguing that biomethane — as a domestic, storable and sustainable energy source — can reduce European dependence on imported fossil fuels. Production currently remains limited and concentrated in a small number of EU member states, despite the technology, feedstock and infrastructure largely being in place.
Energy and Housing Commissioner Dan Jørgensen described biomethane as "a strategic asset that reduces our dependence on imported fossil fuels while supporting farmers, industries, and local communities."
The mechanism forms part of broader EU efforts to meet 2030 biomethane ambitions, with the Commission identifying the sector as capable of contributing to security of supply, decarbonisation and competitiveness objectives.
