SBP launches GHG calculator for biomass emissions reporting
The tool draws on data from SBP's existing Data Transfer System (DTS), reducing reliance on manual data handling and minimising the risk of human error. It has been built in line with SBP Instruction Document 6D, the EU Renewable Energy Directive (RED III) and SBP's Japan instruction document, aligning it with key regulatory frameworks in both markets.
Users can choose between default values and actual operational data, enabling direct comparison between the two methodologies. The calculator also supports analysis of emissions at different stages of the supply chain and, in some cases, allows comparison between market-based and location-based electricity emission factors.
While developed primarily for end-users, the tool has broader supply chain applications. Biomass producers can use it to assess the carbon footprint of their product, traders can evaluate the emissions impact of transportation, and certification bodies can draw on it during audit and verification activities.
The calculator has undergone independent limited assurance verification by SGS, confirming that its methodology and functionality have been reviewed without material issues identified.
Carsten Huljus, SBP Chief Executive Officer, said the launch represented a meaningful step toward more accessible and consistent greenhouse gas reporting across the sector, reflecting the organisation's commitment to data-driven certification.
