UK to import wood chips?

It is estimated that the UK will be left with a shortage of wood chips following the increase of commercial-scale biomass-to-energy plants.

According to a report from the Confederation of Forest Industries (Confor) titled Wood Fibre Availability and Demand in Britain 2007-2025, Britain will, for the first time, become reliant on wood chips and pellets as the demand for biomass will exceed domestic supply as early as 2012.

If all the energy plants planned for the UK materialise then the amount of imported wood products could dramatically increase to an annual total of 27 million tonnes.

Confer blamed the government’s climate change mandates and incentives for this sudden rise in renewable energy refineries, including the Renewable Heat Incentive, due to be launched next year.
