“The biomass sector is at a pivot”

The 2024 Argus Biomass Conference brought together a gathering of biomass leaders on 23-25 April at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre in Westminster, London.
The event explored new innovations in the pellet market, new industrial applications of biomass, new procurement opportunities, and convened key companies and senior executives for three days of intensive networking.
Theme of sustainability
Alan Knight, director of sustainability at Drax, gave a presentation entitled Biomass is controversial - we need standards. In it, he said that the biomass sector is at a pivot, and that this pivot is defined by sustainability: “it’s important that we as a sector - for our customers and stakeholders - really start understanding what we mean by sustainability. I think we’ve done a good job so far, but there is more that needs to be done.”
For Knight, there is a gap between what the sector is doing, and with trust from stakeholders. It is important to narrow that gap of trust. He pointed to two important contributions the sector is making towards sustainability.
