Spanish AD plant reaches full capacity with 58 GWh biomethane output
Construction of the facility began in 2025 under a major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor. The plant processes a mixture of agricultural and livestock waste including whey, olive pomace, poultry manure and pork slurry.
The digestate produced requires pasteurisation to comply with European animal by-products regulations (EC 1069/2009) before use as agricultural fertiliser. This processing is critical to the project's circular economy positioning, enabling rural farmers to manage organic waste whilst displacing synthetic fertiliser demand.
The facility operates a digestate pasteurisation system with 200-tonne daily capacity. The pasteurisation process raises digestate temperature to 75 degrees Celsius, with energy recovery reducing thermal consumption and associated carbon emissions.
Spain's biomethane sector is accelerating rapidly. The country had 12 operational biomethane sites in 2024, expanding to 25 in 2025 with 46 facilities anticipated by end-2026. Industry forecasts suggest 90 projects entering operation by 2027, reflecting annual growth rate acceleration driven by renewable energy policy support and circular economy priorities.
The facility's deployment underscores rising momentum in European anaerobic digestion capacity targeting compliance with food waste separation mandates and renewable gas infrastructure development.
