Green & Smart brings its first wholly-owned Malaysian biopower plant online

Green & Smart Holdings, a renewable energy company generating power from biogas captured through the treatment of palm oil mill effluent (POME), has brought online its first power plant.

The 2MW Kahang biogas plant, located in the state of Johor, Malaysia, is now fully operational at headline capacity and renewable power generated from the plant is being exported to the national grid at expected levels, following the successful completion of testing.

The group has been recording initial revenues from the sale of power to Malaysia’s national utility company since testing began in late September 2016.

GSH expects to receive the formal commercial operation certificate (COD) from the national utility in early 2017.

Saravanan Rasaratnam, group MD at Green & Smart, said: “This marks a significant milestone achievement for Green & Smart, as we become an independent power producer supplying electricity to the national grid. It is also a reflection of our commitment to support the government of Malaysia in its renewable energy initiatives.”

The group will be announcing a trading update in respect of the year ended 30 September, 2016, during January 2017.
