Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP), through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund I (ABF I), has reached final investment decision on Cobirgy, a large-scale biogas plant in La Sentiu de Sió, Lérida, Catalonia, marking the fund's first investment in Spain and third outside Denmark.
Cobirgy is designated to produce more than 230 GWh of biomethane annually, positioning it as Spain's highest-output biogas facility to date. The plant will also generate approximately 150,000 tonnes annually of soil improver and organic fertiliser products.
Construction is scheduled for the second half of 2026, with full operations expected by end 2028. The facility will process up to 500,000 tonnes of agricultural and industrial organic waste feedstock annually, converting it into biomethane for energy supply and decarbonisation applications.
More than 350 local farmers have already committed to the project, with over 80 per cent of slurry feedstock sourced from farms within a 15-kilometre radius. The Catalonian government has designated Cobirgy a Strategic Business Project and is providing capital expenditure support.
Thomas Dalsgaard, partner at CIP and lead partner for ABF I, said the investment represented 'an important step' for the fund, contributing to Spain's energy security and decarbonisation whilst creating local employment and driving agricultural sector investment across surrounding rural communities.
ABF I has deployed this investment from its committed capital of €727 million across five investments to date, with Cobirgy representing the fund's expansion into the Spanish bioenergy market.
