Flogas and College Group agree 26 GWh biomethane offtake deal
The site produces biomethane via anaerobic digestion of agri-food and animal by-products and has a total production capacity of 75 GWh per year, with the gas primarily targeting decarbonisation of the Irish transport sector. The supply is expected to deliver annual carbon savings of approximately 6,637 tonnes of CO₂, equivalent to removing around 114 heavy goods vehicles from Irish roads for a year.
The agreement forms part of Flogas' Gas Purchase Agreement strategy to support indigenous biomethane production and accelerate transport sector decarbonisation across the island of Ireland, and builds on a commercial relationship between the two companies spanning more than 20 years.
Barry Murphy, services and renewables director at Flogas, said the deal demonstrated the role biomethane could play in strengthening Ireland's energy resilience while reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels, adding that locally produced renewable gas offered 'a practical, scalable solution for lowering emissions in the transport sector'.
John Paul Gilroy, commercial director at College Group, said the partnership reflected a shared commitment to investing in indigenous energy infrastructure and advancing the circular economy through the transformation of waste streams into renewable energy.
Flogas said it is also in discussions with a food producer in Northern Ireland regarding a potential long-term supply agreement for biomethane sourced from the College Proteins facility, as part of a wider strategy to scale indigenous supply across the island.
