Infortar completes construction of biogas plant in Estonia

Infortar group company Halinga OÜ has completed construction of a new biogas plant, one of the largest of its kind in Estonia, and has been granted an occupancy permit. The facility will begin operations once it receives its integrated environmental permit.

The plant's technical design and implementation was carried out by EnviTec Anlagenbau, a major German green gas producer, with funding provided through the EU's NextGenerationEU recovery instrument.

Ain Hanschmidt, Chairman of the Management Board at Infortar, said the project reflects Estonia's potential to grow as a gas producer alongside its established dairy sector.

"Were we to raise the number of dairy cows by three to four times, thereby restoring it to early-1990s levels, we could at the same time meet Estonia's total gas demand," he said, adding that scaling up biomethane production would strengthen energy and food security while addressing environmental challenges in both rural and urban areas.

Infortar operates across seven countries, with maritime transport, energy and real estate as its core business areas. The group holds a 68.76% stake in Tallink Grupp and a 100% stake in Elenger Grupp, alongside interests in agriculture, engineering, construction minerals and other sectors.
