US wood pellet exports surge in March to top 1.1 million metric tons

US wood pellet export volumes more than doubled between February and March 2026, rising from around 609,000 metric tons to over 1.1 million metric tons, according to figures published by the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service on 5 May.

March volumes also came in well ahead of the 782,000 metric tons recorded in the same month of 2025.

The UK accounted for the bulk of March shipments at around 840,000 metric tons, with Japan and France the next largest destinations at approximately 126,000 and 63,000 metric tons respectively. Pellets reached around 17 countries in total during the month.

Export values followed a similar trajectory, reaching $205.2 million (€175.5 million) in March against $116.1 million (€99.3 million) in February and $165.2 million (€141.2 million) a year earlier.

Across the first quarter of 2026, the US shipped 2.68 million metric tons of wood pellets at a total value of $510.9 million (€436.8 million), compared with 2.4 million metric tons worth $471.1 million (€402.7 million) in Q1 2025.
