SCA Timber’s Bollsta sawmill in Bollstabruk, Sweden has increased its capacity for the production of bioenergy, limiting its need of fossil fuels.
An old on-site boiler has been replaced by two new ones that use Nordic pine bark and other residue from the production of wood-based fuel products.
The use of oil at Bollsta sawmill has been reduced from 3,400 cubic metres per year to almost zero through the investment in the technology upgrade.
New documents unearthed by GMB indicate that between 89 and 148 roles are expected to be lost at the plant around 31 March 2027.
The cuts could represent more than 30% of the site’s 465-strong workforce
