Australian biomethane developer secures operating licence for Adelaide organic waste plant

Delorean Corporation has received an operational licence from the South Australian Environment Protection Authority for its SA1 Salisbury Bioenergy Project, clearing a key regulatory hurdle for what the company says will be Australia's first facility to export biomethane into a gas network from commercial and industrial organic waste.

Construction at the Edinburgh Parks site is approximately 90% complete, with waste acceptance, biological commissioning and first biomethane injection into Adelaide's gas network still to come.

Once operational, the plant will process 70,000 tonnes of organic waste per year from metropolitan Adelaide's commercial, industrial and municipal sectors using anaerobic digestion. The facility will produce 210 terajoules of renewable gas and 6,000 tonnes of biogenic food-grade liquid carbon dioxide annually, along with a biofertiliser product, Australian Carbon Credit Units and GreenPower Renewable Gas Guarantee of Origin certificates.

Delorean said it would initially prioritise packaged organic waste to support controlled commissioning, progressively bringing waste suppliers into the facility before introducing liquid and solid organic waste streams.

Under an agreement announced in April 2025, Australian Gas Infrastructure Group will connect SA1 to its existing South Australian network, extending the potential customer base beyond neighbouring businesses.

Government support for the project totals $7.74 million in grants from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency, after an additional $1.66 million commitment was announced in June 2026.

The SA1 project won the sustainability category at the 2026 Australian Financial Review Energy Awards on 13 October.

Delorean has identified the Salisbury plant as a template for its broader infrastructure portfolio, with further projects designated NSW1 and VIC1 targeted to enter construction in financial year 2027, as reported by Stockhead.
