Japanese trading company Sojitz Corporation has made an equity investment in US-based biomethane producer Fidem Energy LLC, marking its entry into the biomethane production and sales market in the United States.

The investment was made through Sojitz's wholly owned subsidiary Sojitz Corporation of America. Fidem will become an equity method affiliate of Sojitz as a result.

Headquartered in the south-eastern United States, Fidem produces and sells biomethane derived from raw landfill gas. The company draws on more than 30 years of experience in the solid waste management industry and currently operates a biomethane production facility in Tennessee, supplying the domestic market. It also holds a portfolio of additional development rights at various stages of progress.

In the US, demand for biomethane rose 24% in 2025, and is expected to grow further as energy security concerns and decarbonisation targets drive substitution away from fossil-based natural gas.

The two companies said they intend to expand biomethane production across the US by combining Fidem's operational expertise with Sojitz's business development capabilities and global networks. Sojitz added that it expects to supply biomethane to Japan and other markets across Asia.

The investment forms part of Sojitz's Medium-term Management Plan 2026, which identifies green transformation as a strategic priority. The company is also developing a biomethane business in India.
