Latvia opens first public biomethane feed-in point in Džūkste

Latvia has launched its first publicly accessible biomethane injection point, marking a major step in the development of the country’s renewable gas infrastructure, reported LSM.

The new facility, located in Džūkste, Tukums municipality, opened on 28 July and allows green gas producers to deliver biomethane via container and inject it into the national gas grid.

The site, operated by gas transmission operator Conexus, can accommodate up to 10 million cubic metres of biomethane per year — equivalent to around 100 GWh. That compares with Latvia’s total biomethane output of 79 GWh in the first half of 2025, underscoring the importance of new injection capacity as production scales up.

Uldis Bariss, Chair of Conexus’s Management Board, said the development expands Latvia’s gas infrastructure and creates new opportunities for producers lacking a direct grid connection.

“This is a technological solution that allows biomethane to be compressed, transported and injected into the common system,” he said.

Use of the site is free until the end of 2025, after which a fixed tariff will apply.

The €1.5 million project received co-financing from the European Union and reflects growing momentum behind biomethane development in Latvia.

Although around 50 biogas plants operate in the country, only eight currently upgrade biogas to grid-quality biomethane, and most use their own dedicated feed-in infrastructure.

Andis Kārkliņš, head of the Latvian Biogas Association, welcomed the site as a positive development for the sector. He noted that most biomethane currently produced in Latvia is exported, but the availability of shared injection points could make domestic delivery more viable, especially if EU rules evolve to recognise a wider range of feedstocks as sustainable. In that case, up to 20 additional producers could emerge in Latvia, he said.

A demonstration of the injection process was held during the launch event, using a test load supplied by manufacturer BM Holding.

Conexus has announced plans to develop additional public biomethane feed-in points in other regions over the next two years, with locations in Rēzekne and near Ragana currently under consideration.
