Hydro-Québec, the Canadian public utility, has entered into a new long-term power purchase agreement (PPA) with a 22-megawatt (MW) biomass-fuelled power plant located in Saint-Félicien, in the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region of Québec.
The facility is owned and operated by the Société en commandite Bioénergie AE Côte-Nord Canada, a subsidiary of Groupe Rémabec.
The PPA ensures continued operations at the site, which converts locally sourced forest residues into renewable electricity.
Hydro-Québec stated that this agreement will support regional energy supply while promoting sustainable forestry practices and the local circular economy.
The biomass plant uses residual forest material that would otherwise be discarded, turning it into a reliable and renewable energy source.
The new agreement takes effect in 2026 and extends for 25 years. Financial terms were not officially disclosed.
Originally commissioned in 2012, the plant was developed to provide both electricity and heat, contributing to regional development and creating local employment opportunities.
This new agreement aims to secure the plant’s long-term viability and further integrates biomass into Québec’s clean energy mix.
Hydro-Québec has committed to increasing the share of renewable energy in its portfolio and supporting energy autonomy for Québec communities, particularly those in remote or forest-rich areas.
